Halo radius

For the definition of the nucleon halo, click here (html file of 1KB).

A figure ( GIF file of 4.0KB or PS file of 32KB ) shows the relation between the skin and the halo thicknesses. One can see that the halo grows much slower than the skin for thin-skin nuclei (i.e. near the beta-stability line) but by far faster for thick-skin nuclei (i.e. near the drip lines). The maximum value of the halo thickness is 6.9 fm of 50S (indicated by letter C in the figure) among the nuclei inside the drip lines. This value is somewhat smaller than 8.5 fm of 11Li. One should note, however, that such a large halo as in 11Li can be formed only in a very restricted interval of the last-occupied nucleon level [Sa92]. It is possible that more gigantic halos are produced for different force parameters.
